We piped the Fellowship of the Ring DVD to an HD Ready TV via HDMI at 576p, and it does justice to the movie’s epic, sweeping visuals. It lends real depth and intensity to bright outdoor scenes, while dark scenes, such as the journey through the Mines of Moria, are fl awlessly presented. Goblins crawling around in the shadows are effortlessly visible, and there’s no ugly MPEG blocking as the light from Gandalf’s staff washes across the darkness. Edge defi nition is clean and devoid of any harsh white lines (the tell-tale sign of over-sharpening) and this aids overall image clarity. Also impressive is the DV4001’s colour reproduction. The rolling hills of Middle Earth (OK, New Zealand) are saturated in deep, luscious shades of green that look natural at all times, and skin tones are perfectly balanced. Due to the excellent upscaling capabilities of most HD Ready TVs and projectors, you may not notice much extra detail with 720p or 1080i video output, though the lack of any added artefacts suggests that there’s some competent scaling technology at work inside. If your display lacks HDMI, then rest assured that component video also offers terrific picture quality. It’s a little noisier and fractionally softer than HDMI, but retains the same warm colours, contrast range and black level, which contribute to some of the most refined and cinema-like pictures you’ll find at this price. DiVX playback is supremely smooth and clean as our selection of movie trailers demonstrates, making well encoded clips look almost as good as DVD. Hi-res JPEGs look reasonably good, although curved edges look jagged." "The quality and careful arrangement of the internal components greatly benefits stereo CD playback, which sounds almost as good as some dedicated CD players we’ve encountered. There’s a pleasing neutrality and attention to detail that you rarely fi nd among DVD players, which will be music to the ears of those who care about audio as much as they care about pictures. The quality of 5.1-channel Dolby Digital and DTS movie soundtracks largely depends on the quality of your sound system, but Fellowship of the Ring sounds awesome on our test rig. Two-channel downmixes are also clear and enjoyable through a TV or sound system. The only fl aw we encounter is lip sync with HDMI audio and this is rectified by stopping the DVD (but it could equally have been the fault of our test TV)."
